Several years ago, I asked around to find out what others recommended by way of books about leadership. While there were plenty to choose from, few, to my mind, addressed the traits of leadership I felt fitting to the numerous complex and interconnected challenges of the 21st Century.
The Promises of Giants is exactly what I was waiting for. In 200 pages (not that this is important but everyone feels time-starved these days), it spells out the responsibilities of the modern leader to address the critical issues of our times. Equity, inclusion, performance, engagement, culture – it’s all in there.
But I think what I appreciated the most was Amaechi’s advice around taking care of ourselves, in order to give our best to those around us. I felt like I was being counselled by a caring, brotherly, wise soul.
It’s my new favourite business book, and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone interested in the future of work.
