The Coming Wave: AI, Power and the 21st Century’s Greatest Dilemma – Mustafa Suleyman, 2023

This book is a clarion call for technology's next phase...

The magnitude of moral dilemma posed by Mustafa Suleyman in this book can’t be underestimated.

Suleyman co-founded DeepMind in the UK in 2010 to research artificial intelligence. Acquired by Google in 2014, it has broken ground in several areas, not least in the field of deep machine learning. One of its most celebrated accomplishments was the creation of a computer program that beat Lee Sedol – one of the highest-ranking players in the world – at the board game Go.

With specialist experience at the forefront of next-generation digital technology, Suleyman is expertly placed to both extoll the benefits of AI to society and ring the alarm bell for the ethical risks posed by an exponentially paced future.

What is most salient is Suleyman’s focus on the moral issues arising from both next-level AI and biotechnology. As he says, while containment may no longer be an option, it’s on all of us to educate ourselves and protect ourselves and our communities against the inevitable bad-actors who will, as always, leverage ignorance for personal status and gain. This is a clarion call for the next phase of technology.
